CAMDEN, N.J. -- Now in the National Register of Historic Places, the Volney Bennett Lumber Co. office and stable building at Second and Spruce Streets looked like this (above left) in 1962. Started in 1876, the company used horse-drawn wagons (above, right) for lumber delivery until 1911, when the animals were replaced with motor trucks.

The original stable building (above, left) was constructed to house more than 20 teams of horses and mules. In 1963 the stable space was converted in Volney Bennett's retail showroom (above, right) but care was taken to retain the original stable architecture behind the modern walls.

GLOUCESTER, N.J. -- Built in 1883 on the banks of Newton Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River, the Gloucester City Water Works was accepted into the National Register of Historic Places because it is a landmark in the history of municipal water system engineering.

The 118-year-old building's Victorian Gothic architecture is suggestive of a military facility. Today the structure remains part of the city's water works complex on Johnson Boulevard near Nicholson Road.
