CAMDEN, N.J. -- From the turn of the 20th Century to the 1960s there was a thriving Jewish community at the center of this city on the Delaware River. The 1937 photo above, left, shows the downtown. The youngsters above, right, are Ruth Soskenko Goodman and her brother, Jay Jerome, outside their family's kosher restaurant.

For the last twenty years, the Tri-County Jewish Historical Society has been collecting images and artifacts that document the people, places, businesses and cultural activities of Jewish Camden. Above, left, is the gas-lite interior of the Nuroch Jewelry Store at 1124 Broadway in 1900. The 1918 photo above, right, shows the Seidman Hardware Store with Mr. & Mrs. Seidman and store clerk Henry Schreibstein.

Downtown Camden was the region's most fashionable shopping district. Above, left, the opening of Pinsky's Department Store in 1924 during the "flapper" era. The local Jewish community maintained Camp Hilltop in Medford as a summer getaway for many of its children.

In 1942 Jewish merchant Jack Naden's store (above, left) on the corner of 24th and Federal Streets was typical of downtown shops in its patriotic window displays. Above, right, Ann Lemerman and Ruth Goodman pack relief supplies as part of a drive to assist victims and refugees in war-ravaged Europe shortly after the conflict ended.
