LAWNSIDE, N.J. -- Encamping on the grounds of the Peter Mott House Underground Railroad Museum, members of the 22nd U.S. Colored Troops Infantry Regiment conducted a day-long demonstration of Civil War weapons, gear and military procedures. The event was jointly sponsored by the Camden County and Lawnside Historical Societies.

In the audience, above, left, are Camden County Freeholder Riletta Cream, Freeholder Director Jeffrey L. Nash, Clinton Higgs Jr., (in bowler hat and costume as Peter Mott), and Gary Smith, a docent from the historic Griffith-Morgan House in Pennsauken. Sgt. Rashid Khan, above, right, explains the harsh realities of a Civil War soldier's daily life.

Corporal Brian S. Daniels (above, left) of Manchester, N.J., explains the bayonets that were a crucial weapon for members of the 22nd in the 1864 and 1865 campaigns. Other authentic battle gear was on display (above, right).

In the travel garb of Civil War period, Teresa Jones of Neptune, N.J. (above, left), explains the clothing and customs of Civil War times. On display was a mess kit of a civil War soldier (above, right).
